Welcome to May!
May is one of those months that feels like a new beginning. The change in the light, sprouting flowers, warmer temperatures, all these things help us generally to feel better.
Mother Nature really knows what she’s doing. We all know that a walk in the fresh air helps to boost our mood. You can think of your essential oils as concentrated nature, where you can concoct your custom mood solution.
Most essential oils are supportive for mood, and based on research into the different chemical constituents in each oil scientist can report on how an oil might be supportive for different emotional states. We don’t just make this up, but I’m also not about to go mucking around in the research either. At some point you have to decide what you’re going to trust.
I always trust what I have experienced personally. Sometimes when I report on what an oil can do I speak from a place of personal experience, and other times I’m passing on what others have experienced for them.
It’s important to remember that everyone is unique, and oils work differently on each person. If an oil doesn’t work the way you expect it to, don’t assume it’s because the oils don’t work, it’s likely because that oil works differently with you. This is why the promos are such a great way to experience new oils. It’s a great way to expand your oily options, and you may stumble upon a solution you weren’t expecting.
Ok, there’s my speech. Let’s find out how to support our mood with May’s deals.
Geranium: 15% off
I’ll be honest, I don’t use Geranium very much. I like it when a promo comes up for an oil that I don’t use often because it makes me pay attention to that oil. Geranium has a strong aroma so this is likely why I don’t gravitate towards it. Growing up in a scent-free home, I tend to gravitate to the more subtle oils.
Let’s take a look at why Geranium is a great oil to have around. I’m definitely going to be using it a lot more after learning more about this one. As my reference I looked to the excellent dōTERRA series “Discover Solutions”, where they have a spotlight on every oil in their collection. Here’s the link to the Geranium article if you want to look for yourself.
- Geranium is stellar for skin and hair. You can find Geranium in many of dōTERRA’s skin support products. Having the oil at your disposal means you can also add it to your existing skin- or hair-care routine for an extra boost. It’s especially supportive for oily skin.
- It can support your mood, especially when you need some calming or grounding. Just a quick whiff out of the bottle or a tiny dab to the wrists will help. Try it, even if you think it won’t work. You never know, and it won’t make anything worse.
- Geranium can help keep bugs away. One of its chemical constituents is Citronellol, which might sound familiar. You know what that does.
Putting it all together, if you put some Geranium in your moisturizer you’ll support your skin, your mood, and keep bugs away, all at the same time. Bonus: you won’t be adding any toxins to your life or environment either.
One further tip: because of its stronger aroma Geranium is a great option for using on your wool dryer balls. Experience the calming benefits of Geranium just by putting on a shirt.
I think Geranium just attained superstar status in my books. I’m going to dust off my bottle now.
What is a “Free Product of the Month”?
In dōTERRA world we have a great Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP). It’s like those points you rack up when you use your credit card or shop at a store on a regular basis, but amplified.
LRP is the program for people who opt to buy something each month. It’s completely optional, free to join and to quit at any time. The only obligation is to buy one something every month, and you can customize everything about that monthly order.
dōTERRA treats their LRP customers very, very well. The Free Product of the Month (POM) program is just one example of the rewards that come along with this program. Every month, if you place a qualifying order before the 15th of the month, you get a free something. (A qualifying order is minimum 125pv. Ask your oily support person or me for more info.)
Sometimes the free POM is something you can buy in the regular stock, like Lime was last month. Other times, like this month, dōTERRA gives us something we can’t otherwise buy for ourselves. Clementine is a limited-edition oil. It comes around every once in a while as a bundle with other oils, or as an exclusive freebie, like we have this month.
Clementine: Free Product of the Month for May
Clementine, like all the other citrus oils, is a great mood lifter. I always use citruses in the morning to help get my day going, especially when I’m dragging my feet. If the day is dreary and gloomy, citrus oils are always the way to go.
If you’re someone who enjoys a good backstory on a product, here’s dōTERRA’s blog post on Clementine including info on where they grow, how they’re different from Mandarins (which I didn’t know before today), and some ideas on how to use the oil. There’s also a great audio clip on the origins of the Clementine. It’s really interesting!
Here’s how I like to use Clementine:
- Diffuse Clementine with Peppermint (or Spearmint) and Rosemary to help support focus. In my home office I’m always diffusing some combo of citrus/mint/herb, and it’s nice to change it up once in a while.
- Lift your mood with Clementine. Diffuse, sniff right out of the bottle, or add a drop to your palms and cup over your nose to inhale. Citrus oils are especially great when you haven’t seen the sun for a while.
- Put a drop in your water. It tastes delicious and you get all the mood benefits at the same time.
You may see that you can use citrus oils on your skin. You can definitely do this, just be aware that almost all the citrus oils are photosensitive, which means they can magnify the effects of UV. Best to keep your topical citrus use to evening and/or under cover of clothing.
Clementine also has surface cleansing properties. It’s a great one to add to your counter spray to add a little oomph and lift your mood in the process.
Help Mom Manage Stress
The Mother’s Day bundle is always a fun one. The limited-time bundle this year combines a great diffuser with three of our favourite oils for stress management. What mom doesn’t need a little stress management? No, you don’t have to be a mom to get this deal, it’s great for everyone!
The bundle contains:
- Roam Diffuser
- Balance blend, 15ml
- Serenity blend, 15ml
- Wild Orange oil, 15ml
The Roam Diffuser
The Roam is the diffuser I use in my home office. It has a charging base that you plug into the wall, and the diffuser is removable from this base. This makes is super easy to refill, and has the added benefit of being able to move it around wherever you need it.
I was going to go into a big description of the features of this diffuser but then I found this great 2-minute video instead. Have a look to see the Roam in action. It shows you what it looks like, the different light settings, and explains the sustainability practices that went into the build.
Personal anecdote: I dropped my Roam and the top broke. It was cool to see how all the stone fit together. My wonderful husband glued it back together and it’s just fine.
Also, I will report that it runs very quietly. We musicians are very distracted by background noise, so this is an important point. If you use a diffuser in your teaching studio it’s even more important. I highly recommend this diffuser for its ease of use, the ability to move it around, and its quiet motor.
In the warmer months it’s great to have the flexibility to take the diffuser outside with you. When you’re outside during bug season this is a huge advantage! Remember those icky coil thingies we used to burn outside to keep the mosquitoes away? Now we can just grab the Roam diffuser, use some of that Geranium we got at 10% off this month, and you’re good to go. Of course we have other oil blends for this too, but if you’ve got Geranium anyway you might as well use it, right?
The Mood Oils
What a great combo of oils for mood management!
If you need a pick-me-up or a little boost in the afternoon Wild Orange is your best friend. You only need a few drops as this oil is very potent. We have Clementine for this too, but Wild Orange is a staple and it’s always in stock. Everyone loves Wild Orange and it’s a staple for good reason.
Balance is a blend of tree oils and it smells exactly like taking a walk in the woods after a spring rain. You know how you feel when you take that big sniff in the spring trees? We have this in a bottle, right here. It can calm an overwhelm/freak-out session dead in its tracks, I’ve seen it happen many times.
If anyone is cranky in your house a tried-and-true blend is equal parts Balance and Wild Orange which we affectionately call “Monster Juice”. Pop that combo in the diffuser and place it strategically (easy to do with the Roam), or put a drop of each in your palms, rub on your clothes and go near the person. I call that “stealth diffusing” and it works like a charm. They’ll feel better and they won’t even notice the shift. Maybe that person is you, let’s be real.
Serenity is our sleep blend. I love Serenity to calm the hamster wheel, especially when I’ve stayed up too late and can’t turn off my racing thoughts. You can use it during the day too when you find yourself in need of some serious calming down.
All these oils blend well together too so have fun experimenting! I’ve started you off with Monster Juice, you can take it from there.
